Got a pop-up that said your computer was infected? Someone claiming to be “Microsoft” or “tech support” told you to call a number? If you called — or worse, let them connect remotely — you’re not alone. Tech support scams are common in Lethbridge, and they’re designed to create panic.I’m Tony from Y-Not Tech Services. This guide explains what a tech support scam looks like, what to do immediately,
and how to make sure your computer and accounts are actually safe.
What a Tech Support Scam Usually Looks Like
These scams typically start in one of these ways:
- A browser pop-up claiming “Virus detected” with a phone number to call
- A fake invoice or email saying you bought something you don’t recognize
- A cold call from “support” saying your computer is sending error reports
- A message saying your accounts are compromised and you must act now
The goal is to get you to install remote access software (or let them guide you through it), so they can take control of your computer.

If You Let Them Connect: What to Do Immediately
Don’t panic — but don’t ignore it. Here are safe next steps:
- Disconnect from the internet (turn off Wi-Fi or unplug ethernet).
- Do not keep “testing” things or logging into banking/email on that computer.
- Write down what happened: what you clicked, what you installed, what accounts you accessed.
- Change important passwords from a different device (phone/tablet) — especially email,
banking, and any accounts that use your email for password resets. - If money was sent or banking info shared, contact your bank right away.

Why “Just Uninstalling” the Remote App Isn’t Enough
Many people think removing AnyDesk/TeamViewer/etc. solves the problem. Sometimes it does — but often it doesn’t.
Scammers may:
- Change browser settings to keep redirecting you to scam sites
- Install unwanted software that runs in the background
- Add extensions that capture information
- Create persistence so access returns later
A proper cleanup checks for hidden access, unwanted tools, browser hijacking, and security risks — then locks things down.
That overlaps with virus and malware work too, so if you suspect infection, see:

Signs Your Computer May Still Be Compromised
- Your browser homepage or search engine changed
- You’re getting more pop-ups than usual
- The computer is suddenly slow, freezing, or overheating
- You notice new programs you didn’t install
- You’re getting password reset emails you didn’t request
