A slow or unreliable Wi-Fi connection can be incredibly frustrating—especially if it happens when you’re trying to check email, watch TV, or join a video call with family.
Here in Lethbridge, I’m called out to fix Wi-Fi problems more often than almost anything else, and the good news is: most issues can be solved quickly once we find what’s causing them.
If your Wi-Fi keeps dropping or showing “Connected, no internet,” this guide will walk you through common causes and simple fixes.
If you’d like help, I offer Wi-Fi & Internet Troubleshooting in Lethbridge for home users and seniors.
1. Your Modem or Router Needs a Restart
It sounds too simple to be true, but restarting your modem and router fixes a surprising number of Wi-Fi issues.
Your equipment is basically a small computer, and restarting it clears temporary glitches and resets your connection to your internet provider.
Try this:
- Unplug the power from both your modem and router
- Wait 20–30 seconds
- Plug the modem back in and wait 60 seconds
- Plug the router back in
If your Wi-Fi works better afterwards, that’s a good sign the equipment just needed a reset.
2. Weak Signal in Certain Rooms
Wi-Fi can struggle to travel through walls, floors, appliances, and long distances.
If some rooms in your home lose connection or have very slow speed, it may simply be a coverage issue.
This is especially common in:
- Larger homes
- Basement family rooms
- Homes with older construction materials
- Homes with the router tucked in a corner or behind furniture
During onsite visits, I check your signal strength and help position equipment to improve coverage.
You can learn more about that on my Onsite Computer Repair in Lethbridge page.
3. Too Many Devices Connected at Once
Homes today often have 10–20 devices connected to Wi-Fi even if you don’t realize it:
phones, laptops, tablets, printers, smart TVs, speakers, video doorbells, and more.
Older or lower-end routers may struggle with this and start dropping connections.
Signs this might be your issue:
- Wi-Fi works fine in the morning but slows down in the evening
- Video calls freeze when someone else streams TV
- Newer devices connect, but older ones drop
If you’re not sure whether your router can handle your home, I can help you choose something appropriate—without overspending.
4. Your Provider’s Equipment Is Outdated
If you’ve had the same modem or router from Shaw or Telus for several years, it might be time for an upgrade.
Older equipment often can’t keep up with today’s internet speeds or number of connected devices.
I work with all major providers and can help determine whether the issue is inside your home or with the provider’s signal itself.
5. Interference from Nearby Networks
In neighbourhoods or apartment buildings, your Wi-Fi may be competing with dozens of nearby networks on the same frequency.
This can cause:
- Frequent drops
- Slow speeds
- Devices refusing to connect
A quick settings change can often fix this by moving your network to a less busy channel.
6. A Problem with Your Computer or Device
Sometimes the issue isn’t the Wi-Fi at all—it’s a slow computer, outdated software, or even malware.
If your laptop is especially sluggish, a Computer Cleaning & Tune-Up may help more than adjusting the router.
Scam pop-ups and unwanted software can also interfere with your internet connection.
