If your laptop feels like it’s running through molasses—taking forever to start, freezing at random, or struggling with simple tasks—you’re not alone.
Slow laptops are one of the most common issues I see for home users and seniors in Lethbridge.
The good news? Most slowdowns have simple causes. In this article, I’ll walk you through the five most common reasons laptops slow down and what you can try at home.
If you’d like help, I offer Computer Optimization & Maintenance in Lethbridge along with full Computer Cleaning & Tune-Ups.
1. Too Many Programs Running at Startup
Over time, software piles up—and many programs add themselves to the list of apps that launch when you turn on your computer.
This slows down startup and can make your laptop feel overwhelmed.
What you can try:
- On Windows: open Task Manager > Startup and disable apps you don’t need
- On Mac: go to System Settings > General > Login Items
If you’re not sure what’s safe to disable, I’m happy to take a look.
2. Your Hard Drive Is Old or Full
If your laptop still has an older mechanical hard drive (HDD), it may be the biggest reason your computer feels slow.
Even solid-state drives (SSD) slow down when they get too full.
Signs this may be the problem:
- Your laptop takes several minutes to boot up
- Programs take forever to open
- You hear clicking or whirring noises
A storage upgrade can often make an older laptop feel brand new. If you’re unsure whether your drive is failing, I can check it during an Optimization or Tune-Up visit.
3. Not Enough Memory (RAM)
Modern web browsers and apps use much more memory than they used to.
If your laptop has 4GB (or even 8GB) of RAM, it may struggle with:
- Video calls
- Large websites
- Multiple tabs open at once
- Streaming and email running together
In many cases, adding more RAM is an affordable, high-impact upgrade.
4. Software Problems, Updates, or Malware
Slow laptops are often dealing with:
- Outdated software
- Hidden background apps
- Browser extensions you don’t remember installing
- Pop-ups or scam warnings
- Malware slowing the system down
If your laptop became slow right after clicking a suspicious link or seeing a fake “Microsoft” alert, visit my Virus & Malware Removal page.
5. Your Laptop Is Physically Overheating
Dust buildup inside the laptop blocks airflow and causes overheating.
When a laptop gets too hot, it automatically slows itself down to prevent damage.
Signs of overheating include:
- Laptop fan running loudly all the time
- Random shutdowns
- Bottom of the laptop feeling extremely hot
A simple cleaning and tune-up can make a huge difference. Learn more here: Computer Cleaning & Tune-Up.
